Pelvic Health at
Penrose Physical Therapy
Comprehensive & Individualized Care
At Penrose Physical Therapy, we recognize that every person’s pelvic health journey is different. Our approach begins with a thorough assessment to understand your specific symptoms, medical history, and personal goals. We then develop a customized treatment plan that may include manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, posture education, and lifestyle modifications.
Our pelvic health specialists have advanced training in treating pelvic floor dysfunction and understand the intricate connections between the pelvic floor, core, hips, and spine. We treat the whole person, not just symptoms, addressing underlying causes to provide lasting relief.
Whether you’re experiencing symptoms postpartum, during menopause, after surgery, or at any stage of life, we’re here to support you with evidence-based treatments delivered with compassion and respect.
Conditions We Treat
Pelvic health physical therapy can help with a wide range of conditions. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, we can help:
- Urinary Incontinence: Leaking urine with coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercise, or the urge or frequency to urinate. We help strengthen and coordinate pelvic floor muscles to restore bladder control.
- Pelvic Pain: Chronic pain in the pelvis, hips, or lower abdomen. We address muscle tension, trigger points, and dysfunction to reduce pain and improve comfort.
- Painful Intercourse: Discomfort or pain during or after intimacy. We work to relieve muscle tension, improve tissue mobility, and restore pain-free function.
- Low Back Pain: Persistent lower back discomfort often related to pelvic floor weakness or dysfunction. We address the connection between core stability and spinal health.
- Pregnancy & Postpartum: Pain during pregnancy, preparation for childbirth, or recovery postpartum including diastasis recti and cesarean scar management. We support you through every stage of motherhood.
- Pelvic Organ Prolapse: Sensation of pelvic heaviness or pressure. We provide strategies and exercises to manage symptoms and improve pelvic support.
- Post-Surgical Recovery: Rehabilitation following pelvic surgeries including hysterectomy, hemorrhoidectomy, radiation treatment to the pelvic region, prostatectomy, or prolapse repair. We guide safe, effective recovery.
- Specialized Pilates for Pelvic Health: Pilates is an excellent complement to pelvic health physical therapy. At Penrose Physical Therapy, we offer specialized Pilates programming that focuses on core stability, pelvic floor coordination, and whole-body strength—all essential for optimal pelvic health.
Our Approach: Personalized, Integrated, Discreet
- Thorough Evaluation & Listening
From day one, we prioritize your comfort, privacy, and trust. We begin with a full history (medical, obstetric, surgical, sexual, bowel/bladder) plus movement and musculoskeletal screening. Together, we set goals rooted in your priorities. - Internal & External Assessment (as appropriate & consented)
When needed and with your informed permission, our specially trained therapists may perform internal pelvic floor assessments (vaginal, rectal) to evaluate muscle tone, coordination, trigger points, scar mobility, and sensitivity. We always ensure consent, clear explanations, and choice. - Manual Therapy, Soft Tissue & Myofascial Techniques
We use gentle, hands-on techniques — myofascial release, connective tissue mobilization, deep soft tissue work, scar mobilization, nerve gliding, trigger point work — to restore mobility and reduce pain or tension. - Targeted Exercise & Motor Retraining
You’ll receive individualized exercises to retrain coordination, strength, and endurance of your deep core, diaphragm, pelvic floor, hips, and trunk. We focus on movement patterns that integrate your pelvic health with function (walking, lifting, posture, breathing). - Neuromuscular Re-education & Biofeedback (as needed)
We may use biofeedback, internal sensors, or surface EMG (if available in your location) to help you ‘see’ and learn more precise pelvic floor control. - Specialized Pilates Integration
Once foundational control and awareness are intact, we can progress with Specialized Pilates (mat or small-equipment) tailored to pelvic health. Pilates helps:
- Improve core stability and global strength
- Restore balanced posture and movement
- Reinforce pelvic floor–abdominal coordination
- Safely progress function back to daily, athletic, or recreational activities
You won’t just do Pilates — your Pilates is selected and progressed through the lens of your pelvic health demands.
- Gradual Return to Daily / Advanced Activities
We guide you safely back to the things you love — lifting children or groceries, workouts, intimacy, running, sports — ensuring your pelvic health is reinforced, not compromised.
