Penrose Physical Therapy

Specialized Balance & Falls Treatment Right Here in Lacey, WA

Balance problems often develop gradually, making them easy to overlook at first. You may notice yourself reaching for the handrail more often, holding onto furniture as you walk through your home, or feeling less confident on uneven ground. Over time, these changes can make you avoid activities, travel, or social events because you’re worried about falling.

What Are Balance Problems?

At Penrose Physical Therapy, we know that balance is much more complex than simply “being unsteady.” Three major systems work together to keep you balanced:

    • Your visual system, which helps you understand your surroundings.
    • Your somatosensory system, which provides feedback from your feet and joints about where your body is in space.
    • Your vestibular (inner ear) system, which helps control balance and spatial awareness.

When one or more of these systems isn’t working properly, balance becomes more difficult and the risk of falling increases.

What Are The Symptoms of Balance Problems?

Balance issues can affect many aspects of everyday life and often become more noticeable over time.

Common symptoms include:

  • Feeling unsteady while walking
  • Frequent tripping or stumbling
  • Holding onto furniture or railings for support
  • Difficulty walking on uneven surfaces
  • Dizziness or feeling off balance
  • Fear of falling
  • Reduced confidence during daily activities
  • Tingling or numbness in the feet caused by peripheral neuropathy

Many people begin limiting their activities because they don’t feel safe. Unfortunately, avoiding movement often leads to weakness, which can make balance even more challenging.

What Is Our Approach To Treating Balance Problems?

At Penrose Physical Therapy, we combine one-on-one care with advanced technology to identify the underlying cause of your balance concerns and create a treatment plan that’s personalized to your needs.

Your care may include:

  • Comprehensive balance and fall risk assessments
  • One-on-one physical therapy with a licensed provider
  • Balance and strength training
  • UprightVR technology to evaluate the visual, vestibular, and sensory systems and create targeted rehabilitation programs
  • Stimpod therapy for patients with peripheral neuropathy to help improve nerve function and sensation in the feet
  • Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) when appropriate to support healing for certain neurological and vestibular conditions

By understanding which balance system is contributing to your symptoms, we’re able to provide more precise treatment that targets the root cause rather than simply addressing the symptoms.

Our goal is to help you regain confidence, reduce your risk of falling, and return to the activities you enjoy safely.
