What Is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a common condition that causes bones to gradually become thin, weak, and brittle over time. Think of the inside of a healthy bone as a strong, dense honeycomb. With osteoporosis, the spaces in that honeycomb become much larger, meaning your bones lose density and structural strength.

It often develops slowly without any early warnings—which is why many people don’t realize they have it until a minor fall or even a simple action like coughing or bending over leads to a sudden fracture. While anyone can develop osteoporosis as they age, targeted physical therapy, safe strength training, and balance exercises can significantly help slow down bone loss and keep you moving safely and confidently.

What are the symptoms of Osteoporosis?

In its early stages, osteoporosis is often called a “silent” condition because it typically causes no pain or obvious warning signs at all. However, as bone density continues to decrease, you may start noticing specific physical red flags, including:
  • Unexplained Back Pain: Ongoing ache or sharp pain in your back, often caused by a fractured or collapsed vertebra in the spine.
  • Loss of Height Over Time: Noticing you are getting slightly shorter over the years as the bones in your spine gradually compress.
  • A Stooped or Rounded Posture: Developing a forward curve in your upper back (often called a “dowager’s hump”) as the vertebrae weaken.
  • Bones That Break Easily: Sustaining a fracture from a surprisingly minor bump, strain, or low-impact fall that normally wouldn’t cause an injury.
