What Is Shoulder Pain?

One of the most common causes of shoulder pain is overuse of the rotator cuff. Although more than 18 muscles help control the shoulder and shoulder blade, the four muscles that make up the rotator cuff often end up doing more work than they should. Over time, this can lead to tendonitis, tendon degeneration, calcification, or even rotator cuff tears.

It’s also important to remember that not all shoulder pain actually starts in the shoulder. Sometimes discomfort that feels like it’s coming from the shoulder is actually being referred from the neck, which is why a thorough assessment is so important before beginning treatment.

What are the symptoms of Shoulder Pain?

Shoulder pain can affect many everyday activities, making even simple tasks feel difficult.

Common symptoms may include:

  • Pain when reaching overhead or behind your back
  • Difficulty lifting or carrying objects
  • Weakness in the shoulder or arm
  • Stiffness and reduced range of motion
  • Pain when sleeping on the affected side
  • Discomfort during work, exercise, or recreational activities

Many people also notice that shoulder pain gradually limits their independence. Getting dressed, washing your hair, reaching into cabinets, participating in sports, or completing household chores can all become more challenging as symptoms progress.

What Is Our Approach To Fixing / Treating Shoulder Pain?

At Penrose Physical Therapy, we believe successful treatment begins with understanding exactly what’s causing your symptoms. Every shoulder is different, which is why we perform a comprehensive evaluation of not only the shoulder itself, but also the shoulder blade, surrounding muscles, and neck to determine what’s truly contributing to the problem.

Once we’ve identified the source of your symptoms, we’ll create a personalized treatment plan that may include:

  • One-on-one care with a licensed physical therapist
  • Hands-on manual therapy
  • Personalized strengthening and mobility exercises
  • Movement education and exercise progression
  • Advanced regenerative therapies when appropriate

Rather than simply sending you home with a sheet of exercises, we work alongside you at every visit. We monitor your progress, make adjustments as needed, and ensure each exercise is helping, not aggravating, your condition. If something isn’t working, we’ll modify your treatment plan so it continues moving you toward your goals.

Our goal is to help you restore strength, improve movement, and get back to the activities you enjoy with confidence.
