Whether you’ve just finished a long run, spent a busy day on your feet or are recovering from surgery, heavy, tired and swollen legs can make everything feel harder.

Compression therapy is a simple, deeply relaxing way to help your body clear out fluid, refresh your muscles and get you back on your feet feeling lighter. It’s now available as part of the Wellness services at Penrose Physical Therapy.

What Is Compression Therapy?

Our compression therapy uses specially designed air-powered sleeves that fit comfortably over your legs. Once you’re seated and relaxed, the sleeves gently inflate and deflate in a rhythmic pattern, applying pressure that starts at your feet and moves upward toward your heart.

This wave-like massage mimics and supports the natural pumping action of your muscles. It helps push fluid and metabolic waste out of your limbs, encourages fresh, oxygen-rich blood to flow in, and supports your lymphatic system, the network that clears excess fluid and waste from your tissues.

A session usually lasts 20 to 30 minutes. You stay fully clothed, and most people find it so relaxing that they close their eyes and unwind. You can adjust the pressure to suit your comfort level, and there’s no downtime afterward.

The benefits Of Compression therapy

Compression therapy is popular with athletes, active adults and anyone who spends long periods sitting or standing.

It may help you:

  • Recover faster from running, pickleball, hiking, gym workouts and other activities
  • Reduce muscle soreness and stiffness so you’re ready for your next session sooner
  • Decrease swelling in the legs, ankles and feet
  • Improve circulation and relieve that heavy, tired-legs feeling
  • Support recovery after surgery or injury, as part of a guided rehab plan
  • Relax and de-stress, with a treatment that feels like a full-leg massage

Many of our clients book compression therapy regularly during training blocks, or after long days at work, to keep their legs feeling fresh.

Why Choose Penrose Physical Therapy For Compression Therapy

Compression boots are common in pro sports facilities, but most people never get the chance to try them, let alone with expert guidance. At Penrose Physical Therapy, you get both. Our team, led by Jennifer Penrose, brings more than two decades of experience helping runners, active adults and people of all ages stay mobile for life.

Before your first session, we’ll check that compression therapy is safe for you, as it isn’t suitable for everyone, such as people with blood clots or certain heart and circulation conditions. We’ll then set it up to match your goals. And because we’re a full physical therapy clinic, we can combine compression therapy with hands-on treatment, exercise programs and regenerative therapies like shockwave and EMTT to help you recover faster and stay injury-free.
