What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a treatment where a trained physical therapist inserts very thin, sterile needles into tight bands of muscle known as trigger points. These “knots” can cause pain where they sit and send pain to other areas of your body. Although it uses similar needles, dry needling differs from acupuncture. It’s based on modern anatomy and targets the specific muscle problems found during your assessment. No injections are used, which is why it’s called “dry.”

How Dry Needling Works

When the needle reaches a trigger point, the muscle often gives a small twitch, a sign that the tight tissue is letting go.

Dry needling can:

  • Release tight, knotted muscles that restrict movement
  • Improve blood flow to the treated area
  • Calm overactive pain signals
  • Restore normal muscle length and function
  • Make your exercises and hands-on therapy more effective

Most patients feel a brief ache or cramp during treatment, and some mild soreness for a day or so afterward, much like after a good workout.

Why Dry Needling Matters for Your Recovery

If you’ve been living with muscle tightness and pain for months or years, you know how it affects your sleep, your work and the activities you enjoy. Massage, stretching and painkillers often bring only temporary relief.

Dry needling offers several compelling advantages:

  • Fast-Acting Relief: Many patients feel looser and move more freely after their very first session.
  • Targets the Source: Needles reach deep trigger points that hands alone can’t access.
  • Drug-Free: No medication, no injections and no reliance on painkillers.
  • Boosts Your Other Treatment: With pain eased, your exercises become easier and your results last longer.
  • Return to Activity: Get back to the sports, hobbies and daily activities you love.
