Dry needling is a treatment where a trained physical therapist inserts very thin, sterile needles into tight bands of muscle known as trigger points. These “knots” can cause pain where they sit and send pain to other areas of your body. Although it uses similar needles, dry needling differs from acupuncture. It’s based on modern anatomy and targets the specific muscle problems found during your assessment. No injections are used, which is why it’s called “dry.”
When the needle reaches a trigger point, the muscle often gives a small twitch, a sign that the tight tissue is letting go.
Dry needling can:
Most patients feel a brief ache or cramp during treatment, and some mild soreness for a day or so afterward, much like after a good workout.
