Too often, people wait until their health is in crisis before making changes—but what if you could take proactive steps today to enjoy a longer, healthier, more vibrant life? That’s exactly the purpose of the FREE Health Heroes Event on Sunday, October 12th at the Lacey Community Center.
Inspired by the Blue Zones series, this event brings together athletes, doctors, and local role models to showcase what it takes to live well at any age. Doors open at 2:00pm to meet local health-focused vendors, with the main program beginning at 2:30pm.
International soccer star Kasey Keller will headline the event, sharing the most important lessons from his career and what he now does in his 50s to maintain health and resilience. Make sure to stay until the end for a meet and greet! You’ll also hear from Dr. Tom Helpenstell, a retired orthopedic surgeon who continues to push boundaries by skiing and competing in triathlons. Their stories will inspire you to take control of your own health journey. Other local health heroes from our community in their 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s will be on the panel to tell their story of how they face aging and adversity and what things have made all the difference in aging well.
Sponsored by Penrose Physical Therapy, whose mission is to redefine impossible with regards to aging and injuries they will introduce how regenerative medicine is creating opportunities to heal faster, avoid unnecessary surgery, and restore quality of life. You will here from some real patients on the panel what it has done for them.
Sponsors like Complete Hearing & Balance and other local businesses will also showcase tools and services that support proactive wellness. Did you know that with hearing loss if you choose not to get hearing aides your brain works harder and that leads to cognitive decline later in life or the increased fall risk that you will have? Or how about tinnitus (ringing in your ears)? Did you know tinnitus is often your brain’s way of trying to make up for that loss of hearing and again doing nothing leads to your brain working harder and higher risk of dementia later? Hear from Dr. Ali Vega on the best tips to living life well when it comes to hearing.
The evidence is clear: lifestyle choices, screenings, and access to innovative therapies make a huge difference. Studies consistently show that people who invest in their health—through movement, nutrition, recovery, community, and preventive care—enjoy more years free of disease and disability. This event is your chance to learn practical steps you can take right now to improve your long-term outcomes.
Senior Games will have a table there to connect with. If you don’t have community or have an active hobby that you enjoy your longevity statistics are not as good. Find a way to get connected with an activity that you would enjoy! Movement/exercise can be fun and social. Talk to them about all the activities they have – you will be surprised at what all they have to offer.
If you’ve been waiting for the “right time” to focus on your health, consider this your sign. Don’t let preventable health challenges rob you of your future.
